Go on a scavenger hunt for healthy reasons and guard your health with a generous dose of antioxidants.
We cannot start talking about antioxidants without first explaining free radicals, or super oxides, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, oxidants and lipid peroxy radicals. Those complicated words all refer to the cause of cancer, heart disease, cataracts, macular degeneration, premature aging, suppressing the immune, Parkinson’s, arthritis, male infertility, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune diseases. It is a fact that 80 to 90% of all degenerative diseases involve free radical activity. Antioxidants help your body to lessen their damage.
Free radicals are incomplete, unstable molecules that, for one reason or another, are missing one of the electrons which hold the molecules together. Therefore, they will aggressively seek an electron by hijacking one from a complete molecule. Since the victim molecule now needs a new electron to replace the one that is stolen from it, it will hijack another and will create a chain reaction. This process is called oxidation.
Free radicals easily bind to fat, carbohydrate, protein and DNA. Our body needs some free radicals to oxidize glucose and fat, and our immune system uses them to fight viruses and bacteria. However, most of them are destructive. Visualize rust on metal to understand the oxidation reaction: free radicals are the same annoying case of cut apples and potatoes turning brown.

Antioxidants scavenge or neutralize free radicals. Studies have identified more than 60 health conditions that may be prevented or treated with antioxidant supplementation. Fruits, vegetables, grains and green tea all contain high levels of antioxidants and other hytonutrients. Some good examples are tomatoes, corn, carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, soy beans, cantaloupe, oranges, nuts, lettuce, celery and seeds.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to get enough of them to free all the radicals that generated in the body. Increasing the intake of food containing beta-carotene-foods that are orange in colour – vitamin C and vitamin E is most helpful. Food herbs that are rich in antioxidants include milk thistle, gingko bibola, green tea extract, garlic, grapes seed extracts and others.
Food is also a powerful medicine and the list of foods high in vitamin C includes tomatoes, grapefruit, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, pumpkin, peaches, pineapples and nectarines. Greens and green beans, garlic, onions and their family, asparagus, peas, mushrooms, celery, soy foods, green tea, turmeric and walnut all contain important flavonoids our body needs.
So how will you know if you have sufficient level of antioxidants in your body? Unfortunately, the practice of testing this is not common. But for now, eat your vegetables – preferably organic ones – and if you think your diet is not completely satisfying your body’s needs, then get yourself an antioxidant supplement. The perfect dose is a cup of the miracle antioxidant goji berry juice, but green tea works as well and is a deliciously soothing beverage on its own.

Green teas are made from leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant, the same leaves as black tea. Green teas go through a process where the leaves are heated to prevent oxidation while black teas are oxidized for additional color and flavor. The result is a delicious tea that brews to a light golden color and unique flavor. Twinings Green Tea is a style called "Sencha", known for its smooth, mild characteristics.
